USP Partners with CPQD for R$ 1 Million to Develop Zero-Knowledge Proofs in Blockchain
The University of São Paulo (USP) has announced the details of a contract to create privacy solutions in blockchains. The work plan signed on September 28 confirms an investment of R$ 1.008 million in the project.
The initiative brings together researchers from the Polytechnic School and specialists from the CPQD Foundation -- Research and Development Center in Telecommunications, with support from the Foundation for the Technological Development of Engineering (FDTE). The institutions aim to solve performance issues and high computational costs in transaction validation.
The studies focus on the application of zero-knowledge proofs in blockchain systems, a technology that allows for the validation of a financial operation without exposing the data of the parties involved.
"Partnership project focused on the investigation and development of primitives and protocols for Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKP), as well as related technologies that act as technological enablers for privacy solutions in blockchain transaction ecosystems," states a passage reported by Livecoins in the contract.
Research with Zero-Knowledge Proofs Aims to Protect Drex
The official report highlights the direct utility of the tools in state infrastructures such as Drex. The team aims to enhance the level of data protection in blockchains issued by central banks.
The advancement of research seeks to protect cryptographic networks against future attacks from quantum computers. Scientists are working on creating resilient algorithms to ensure the long-term security of assets.
The coordination of the work is under the responsibility of Professor Marcos Antonio Simplicio Junior. The EPUSP specialist leads the execution of the planned stages for the next twenty-four months.
The budget allocates R$ 638 thousand for funding academic scholarships. Undergraduate and graduate students participate in the preparation of technical reports and proof of concepts. Expected results in USP research on blockchain cite protection for Drex (Photo/Reporting by Livecoins).
Agreement Provides for Equal Division of Patents Among Partners
The contract provides for the division of intellectual property in equal shares of 50% for USP and CPQD. Any innovation or invention registered during the term of the agreement follows this sharing rule.
Sebastião Sahão Júnior represents the partner foundation in conducting technology transfer strategies. The plan includes the delivery of a software development kit for integration into commercial systems.
The Foundation for the Technological Development of Engineering manages the resources and transfers of the project. Additionally, the obligations regarding the confidentiality of confidential information remain valid for a period of five years.
SDK Development Facilitates Integration with Financial Market
The technical team plans periodic deliveries of performance reports and reconciliation models. The complete documentation should guide companies interested in adopting the new privacy protocols.
The reduction of computational resource consumption represents a decisive step for the scalability of the sector. The optimization of digital proofs decreases the operational fees paid by users in decentralized networks.
Therefore, the project consolidates Brazil's scientific leadership in developing technologies for the crypto-assets market. The financial ecosystem is closely monitoring the tests with great expectations for the coming months.
