U.S. Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Deficit Reaches $1.99 Trillion
According to data from the U.S. Treasury Department, the federal budget deficit for fiscal year 2026 has risen to $1.99 trillion, up from $1.78 trillion in fiscal year 2025, marking the highest level since the pandemic. Despite the Trump administration's commitment to cut spending, military expenditures, Social Security outlays, and interest on national debt continue to rise, coupled with a decline in corporate tax revenues, leading to an expanded fiscal deficit. The data shows that total expenditures for fiscal year 2026 are projected to grow by 6% year-on-year to $7.4 trillion, while tax revenues are expected to increase by 3% to $5.4 trillion. Rising long-term interest rates have resulted in over $100 billion more in interest payments on national debt compared to 2025. Additionally, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that tariffs imposed by Trump on national security grounds were illegal, requiring the government to refund over $100 billion in tariff revenues. The total U.S. national debt surpassed $40 trillion in August. As inflationary pressures persist and bond yields reach a 20-year high, the government's financing costs have further increased. Treasury Secretary Yellen hopes to reduce the deficit-to-GDP ratio to 3%, but this ratio is projected to rise above 6% again in fiscal year 2026. Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, stated that while economic growth helps, it is not fast enough to complete the necessary fiscal adjustments.
