Karpelès Warns About Implants in Ledger, Losses Exceeding $90 Million
Mark Karpelès, former CEO of Mt. Gox, stated that at least two individuals alerted the company Ledger about tampered devices as early as December 2025. Vietnamese crypto educator Tai Zen and security researcher Joe Grand informed the company about a malicious implant in the Nano X wallet, purchased in August 2025. Ledger acknowledged the findings and promised an internal investigation, but did not warn customers. Karpelès added that in March 2026, the company published an article recommending purchases from authorized sellers, but he believed this was insufficient and could have prevented losses exceeding $90 million. Ledger's CEO Pascal Gauthier responded that the company is doing a lot to protect customers and urged Karpelès to speak only about verified information. Karpelès emphasized that Mt. Gox has nothing to do with the incident. The analytical firm Chainalysis reported that one of the biggest victims was a scammer who lost over 60 BTC, approximately $4.8 million. Ledger introduced a new device, Atom, priced at $849, which can detect tampering even when powered off and is set to hit the market in the summer of 2027.
