IMF Warns of Threats to Global Economy, High Energy Prices and AI Investment Boom
The global economy is under threat due to a combination of destabilizing factors, said IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. The global economy is experiencing pressure from an energy shock due to reduced supply and increased demand amid the development of artificial intelligence. The hardest hit this year are countries affected by military actions, such as Ukraine and the Persian Gulf region. A slowdown is also being recorded in other vulnerable states dependent on energy imports. Oil prices remain around $100 per barrel, fueling inflation and increasing pressure on budget deficits and national debt. At the same time, the boom in artificial intelligence investments supports economic growth in certain countries. Global investments in AI as a percentage of GDP could surpass the level of investments in railway and power grid construction. AI equipment already accounts for over 10% of global merchandise trade. In July, the IMF projected global economic growth of 3% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027, while Ukraine was projected to have GDP growth of only 0.5% annually in 2026-2028.
