a16z to Change Name from a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier
A16z is considering changing the name of its crypto division from a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier and wants to expand its investment scope. The plans have not yet been officially confirmed. According to The Information, a16z has informed investors about the name change, which would align with a broader mandate, allowing the fund to invest in non-crypto-related companies as well. This is significant as a16z Crypto is one of the largest investors in the crypto sector. The expansion could affect which startups gain access to a16z's capital and network. A16z has not publicly announced the name change and expansion; the website still uses the name a16z Crypto. General partner Ali Yahya is leaving to start his own startup. He is not a founder of a16z Crypto; that title belongs to Chris Dixon. Despite the potential name change, crypto remains part of a16z's strategy, which announced Crypto Fund 5 in May, a new billion-dollar fund for blockchain applications.
